I'm gonna be putting that to the test when I install kubuntu on this computer I was given that's running an Intel J1800 with no discrete GPU and I try to run snes9x on it

Depending on how much RAM it has, it should be OK. Running anything past that generation would be iffy as well as running something like bsnes.
